About Us

ASHAJYOTI is a nonprofit organization working for children with disabilities in Assam. Established in 2011 and registered in 2014, ASHAJYOTI provides special education, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavioural support, vocational readiness, and caregiver support. We work to ensure that children with disabilities receive equal opportunities to learn, develop skills, become more independent, and participate meaningfully in society. Through community outreach, awareness, rehabilitation, and education, ASHAJYOTI strives to create a more inclusive and accessible future for every child.

ASHAJYOTI implements an integrated disability rehabilitation and development programme for Children with Disabilities (CwDs), focusing on early intervention, special education, therapy, vocational readiness, caregiver support and community awareness. The programme provides physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavioural support, special education and vocational training according to each child’s individual needs. The programme also strengthens caregivers through home-based therapy training, conducts health check-ups and awareness activities, facilitates access to government schemes and assistive devices, and promotes inclusion and equal opportunities for children with disabilities.

Impact

ASHAJYOTI’s programme has contributed to significant improvements in the personal, social, academic and vocational development of Children with Disabilities (CwDs). Through regular therapy, special education, vocational readiness and caregiver support, children have demonstrated improved communication, motor skills, daily living abilities, social participation and learning. In the first quarter, assessment of 32 students showed improvement from the baseline: Personal development increased from 21.83% to 53%, Social development from 25% to 41%, Academic development from 3.5% to 15%, and Occupational development from 1.49% to 13.2%. These results demonstrate the positive impact of structured, child-centred rehabilitation and education services.

Success Stories

Meet Jiyan Saharia, a child supported by ASHAJYOTI. When Jiyan joined ASHAJYOTI, he faced challenges in communication, learning, movement and performing everyday activities independently. These challenges also affected his confidence and ability to participate actively in school and social activities. Through ASHAJYOTI’s Early Intervention and Special Education programme, Jiyan received regular physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and special education based on his individual needs. His caregivers were also guided on simple home-based activities to continue supporting his development. With consistent intervention and encouragement, Jiyan gradually started making progress. He became more active and engaged, improved his communication and interaction, and showed greater participation in learning and daily activities. His growing confidence encouraged him to interact more with teachers, caregivers and other children. Jiyan’s journey is a reminder that progress may begin with small steps, but with timely intervention, patience, family support and the right opportunities, children with disabilities can develop greater confidence and independence. “Every child has the potential to grow when given the right support and opportunity.”
