Nai Kiran Bringing Light Through Cataract Surgeries

In the rural and tribal regions of Jharkhand, thousands of elderly people are silently living in darkness due to untreated cataracts, the leading cause of blindness in India, responsible for nearly 66% of blindness cases. For many poor and vulnerable families, especially those living in remote villages, access to proper eye care remains a distant dream. Cataract, though completely treatable, continues to steal the dignity, independence, and hope of senior citizens.

The most affected are elderly people above 60 years, daily wage workers, women, and neglected senior citizens, who often spend years struggling with blurred vision or complete blindness. Many are unable to work, move independently, or even recognise the faces of their loved ones. Women, especially widows and elderly mothers, are often the most neglected due to financial dependency and lack of family support.

One of the biggest challenges is affordability. Most families cannot afford surgery, medicines, hospital visits, or transportation costs. Even when surgery is labelled "free", the hidden expenses of travel, food, and post-operative care make treatment impossible for poor families. For a daily wage labourer, losing even one working day means losing food for the family.

Another major issue is lack of awareness. In many tribal and rural communities, cataracts are often accepted as a natural part of ageing or believed to be “Bhagwan ki Marzi”, causing people to delay treatment for years. Many elderly people do not know that their vision can be restored in just a few minutes through a simple surgery. Poor accessibility, social neglect, and gender inequality further worsen the problem.

To address this urgent issue, Nai Kiran has been continuously working in the field of eye care services through its well-equipped 18-bedded charitable eye hospital, Razia Charitable Eye Hospital. Through regular eye screening camps in villages and remote tribal areas, patients suffering from cataracts are identified and guided toward treatment.

Once identified, patients are safely transported to the hospital where Nai Kiran provides completely free cataract surgery, including medicines, food, hospitalisation, and transportation. No elderly person should remain blind simply because they cannot afford treatment.
