Gift a Complete Back-to-School Kit to Underprivileged Children

My name is Lordwin Singh, and this story did not begin in a boardroom or with a big plan. It began the moment I saw a child sitting in a classroom with nothing to write on. Talented, eager, and fully capable but invisible to the system that was supposed to serve him. That one image stayed with me, and it became the reason I started The Old Books Bank under UCWS. The idea was straightforward collect used textbooks from students who no longer need them, and pass them on to children who cannot afford new ones. Every rupee saved on books is a rupee that stays in a struggling family's pocket.

Since we began this journey, we have reached hundreds of children across communities, putting curriculum books back into hands that would otherwise have gone empty at the start of every school year. Our volunteers built this network carefully, ensuring that every child receiving a book felt like a student — not a recipient of charity. The pencil notes left in the margins of donated books carried the spirit of one child forward to the next, a quiet kind of mentorship between strangers who never met.

But the more classrooms I walked into, the more clearly I saw a gap we had not yet filled. A secondhand textbook is powerful but a child cannot write assignments without a notebook, cannot draw geometry without a scale, and cannot erase mistakes without an eraser. These are not expensive items. But for a family living on daily wages, even ₹150 is a difficult choice. I saw children sharing a single pencil between two, folding scrap paper because they had nothing else to write on. That truth changed the direction of everything we we are building.

This year, we are taking the next step with our Back-to-School Stationery Kit Campaign. We have kept the costs as low as possible so that every rupee goes directly to a child. Just ₹150 sponsors a complete basic stationery pack — two notebooks, pencils, an eraser, a sharpener, and a scale. ₹500 provides a full learning kit with foundational books and advanced stationery. And ₹1,500 — the cost of a single dinner out completely equips 10 children with everything they need to show up to school prepared and confident.

We call our approach "Donation with Dignity." We believe that every child deserves to sit in a classroom feeling equal to the student beside them. When a child opens a fresh notebook for the first time runs their fingers across a clean white page and picks up a sharp new pencil something shifts in them. They stop feeling like an outsider. They start feeling like they belong. That feeling is not small. That feeling is the reason children stay in school, keep studying, and dare to dream further.

We are a small team, and much of this work has been carried on our own shoulders. But we refuse to stop because this work matters too much. We are not asking for the world.
