It started with a single night of rain

On July 19, 2026, the skies over Upper Assam opened without warning. A sudden cloudburst upstream sent the Disang, Dikhow, and Brahmaputra tributaries surging past their danger marks. By morning, entire villages across Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, and neighbouring districts had disappeared under floodwater.

Families woke to water at their doorsteps. Some had minutes to grab their children and climb to higher ground. Others weren't so lucky.

This is now one of the worst floods. Upper Assam has seen it in decades, and the water is still rising in places.

The scale of the disaster

• 78 lives lost and counting
• 720,000+ people directly affected across 12 districts
• 1,700+ villages partially or fully submerged
• 20,000+ displaced residents now crowded into temporary relief camps
• Homes, standing crops, livestock, and the roads that connect communities to help; all destroyed or cut off

Behind every number is a family standing on a rooftop, a mother rationing the last of her drinking water and a child who hasn't eaten a proper meal in days.

What survival looks like right now

For families in these relief camps, there is no clean water to drink, no dry food to cook and no roof that isn't leaking. Mosquito-borne illness and waterborne disease spread fast in these conditions, and for a family that has already lost its home, a single illness can be the difference between recovery and catastrophe.

They don't need sympathy. They need supplies, and they need them this week.
