Help Educate & Protect 150 Migrant Children Through Safe Learning Spaces

I am Deepali Chougule, and I started Jidnyasa Initiatives with a simple but urgent belief: no child should lose their childhood to circumstances they did not choose.

I still remember the first time I met children of migrant sugarcane workers. They weren’t holding pencils or books; they were carrying water, caring for siblings, and working alongside their parents in the fields. These children moved constantly, living in temporary shelters, far away from schools, stability, and safety. That moment stayed with me. It wasn’t just about education; it was about dignity, identity, and the right to simply be a child.

Jidnyasa Initiatives was born out of this reality. What began as a small effort to reach a few children has today grown into a movement to protect the childhoods of hundreds of migrant children who are often invisible in our systems. We stepped in where access did not exist: near sugarcane fields, in temporary settlements and in spaces where education had never been reached.

Through our Migrant Children Support Program, we created Sugar Shalas safe learning spaces set up right where these children live and work. These are not just classrooms; they are places of hope. Here, children who have never held a storybook begin to read. Children who never wrote their names begin to discover their identity.

But learning cannot happen on an empty stomach. That is why we ensure nutritious meals, so children are not just present, but healthy and focused. We bring learning to life through joyful, activity-based methods, making education something they look forward to, not fear or avoid. Alongside this, we conduct regular health check-ups and hygiene awareness sessions, addressing challenges that go far beyond academics.

Equally important is our work with parents. Migration often forces families into survival mode, where education becomes secondary. We build trust with them and help them see that their child's future can be different: education can travel with them.

Over time, we have seen transformation. Children who once dropped out are now continuing their education. Many are learning to read and write for the first time. They are healthier, more confident, and safer. Most importantly, they are beginning to experience something they were denied a childhood.

But there is still so much more to be done.

Today, we are working to support 150 migrant children, ensuring they have access to learning, nutrition and safe spaces. And this is where you become a part of their journey.
