In India, you don’t have to go far to find a temple.

Turn any corner, and you’ll see one; some filled with people and lights, others standing quietly, covered in dust and silence.

Temples have always been more than just places of worship. They’ve been part of our growing up, the sound of the morning bell, the smell of incense, the festivals that brought the whole community together. But somewhere along the way, we stopped noticing them.

Today, while we fight with all our strength to save a few famous temples, thousands of others are fading away, one broken wall, one cracked idol at a time.

There are over 6,48,000 temples recorded across India; but it’s said there are nearly 7.5 lakh in reality. That means more than a lakh temples are unaccounted for, lost in time, forgotten by all.

Once, people came here to pray. Now, grass grows through the floors where devotees once sat.

Sometimes it’s not about religion, it’s about roots.

A small village temple is more than stone and structure, it’s where people found hope when nothing else worked, where elders gathered under a banyan tree to talk, where a generation learned what community meant.

When we lose these places, we lose a piece of who we are.

What We’re Doing

We’ve started the #ReviveOurTemples initiative: a small step to bring attention and care back to the temples that time forgot.

We want to:

1. Find and document these neglected temples.
2. Help restore them, even if it’s just fixing a roof, repainting a wall, or bringing back an idol to its place.
3. Reconnect local communities with their temples, because it’s not just about rebuilding walls, it’s about rebuilding belonging.

You don’t have to be deeply religious to care; just someone who believes our history deserves a second chance.
