On October 5, 2025, relentless overnight rain triggered catastrophic landslides across the Darjeeling hills and neighbouring districts, flattening homes and sweeping away roads and bridges. Mirik, Sukhia Pokhri, Maneybhanjyang and several surrounding areas were hit hardest; the region recorded an extraordinary 261 mm of rain in 24 hours in places, which caused rivers and slopes to overflow and fail.

The human toll has been severe and is still being updated by officials. As of the latest reports, at least 28 people have died and dozens remain missing across the affected districts; hundreds of residents and tourists were left stranded when roads and bridges were washed away. Authorities continue search-and-rescue operations while casualty figures are being revised as teams reach isolated villages.

Rescue teams and relief workers are on the ground but are stretched thin. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State disaster teams and the Indian Army have been deployed to clear debris, search for the missing and reopen access to cut-off communities; temporary relief camps have been set up to provide shelter, food and medical aid. Political leaders, including the West Bengal Chief Minister, have visited affected areas to coordinate relief. Continued heavy rain and damaged infrastructure are complicating these efforts.

The situation is compounded by downstream flood risk after Bhutan’s Tala Hydropower Dam reportedly overflowed, prompting flood warnings for parts of North Bengal and creating additional urgency for relief and evacuation in low-lying areas. Local reports also note animal losses in the broader flood-affected region (for example, reports of wildlife impacts at Jaldapara), though exact counts for livestock and wildlife are still being compiled by authorities.

Despite valiant efforts from government teams, NGOs and local volunteers, the scale of damage - destroyed homes, broken bridges, blocked roads, stranded tourists and still-unaccounted-for people, means immediate external help is required to scale relief, medical care and rehabilitation.
