Story

On an ordinary Tuesday morning, 24-year-old Priya Verma's life changed forever in just a few seconds.

She was walking home from her evening shift at a local embroidery unit in Lucknow when a man she had rejected months ago threw acid on her face and neck. Neighbours found her screaming on the street.

Priya spent three weeks in the burns ward of a government hospital. The acid caused severe third-degree burns across her face and neck and partial loss of vision in her left eye. Her family; her mother, a daily wage worker, and her younger sister, still in school – spent every single saving they had in those first weeks just to keep her alive.

"I didn't even understand what was happening. I just felt fire – fire everywhere on my face. And then I couldn't see."

When she was discharged, doctors were clear: Priya needs multiple rounds of reconstructive surgery, skin grafting, months of physical rehabilitation, and consistent psychological counselling. Without treatment, the scarring will permanently restrict movement in her neck and jaw. The total cost is ₹10 lakh — a sum her family simply cannot afford.

Priya was the first in her family to finish Class 12. She had started saving to enroll in a tailoring certification course. She had dreams. She still does.

"I don't want people to pity me. I just want a chance – a real chance – to live the life I was building.

Your donation will go directly toward her surgery, rehabilitation, and aftercare – managed by Umeed Ki Roshni Foundation, a non-profit supporting acid attack survivors across Uttar Pradesh.
